3 on 3 basketball is a recreations offering by Princeton Health and Fitness. It is expected that all participants observe and follow the spirit and intent of this offering.

  1. Players: A team will consist of 3 players on the court. A game may be started and continued with a minimum of two players. A maximum of 6 players may be on the team roster. Teams with non-roster players will be forced to forfeit. A participant may only play on one team.

  2. Equipment: All individuals participating in 3 on 3 basketball must wear a shirt or tee shirt as part of their regular uniform. All participants must wear regular basketball shoes with non-marking soles.

  3. Game: 3-on-3 basketball games are 27 minutes in length (two 12 minute halves with a 3 minute break in between the halves). The clock does not stop and there are no time outs permitted. The game is a half court game with normal boundaries plus the half court line defining the playing area. Teams will shoot to see who starts with the ball. Jump ball during regulation will go to the next team who gets possession of the ball. Possession will alternate with each jump ball and/or beginning of the half.

  4. Fouling: Teams are responsible for officiating their own games. Players will not foul out of a game. However, excessive or intentional fouling is considered poor sports conduct.
If the game is within a single possession and the team that is losing draws a shooting foul, the player that was fouled will get one free throw (it doesn't matter whether it was a three or a two point attempt). That team will also get possession of the ball and there will be 10 seconds added to the clock.

  5. Scoring: scoring is 3s and 2s

  6. Overtime Period: If the score is tied at the end of the second half, there will be a two minute overtime period. If the game continues and the score is still tied after the second overtime, each team will choose one person to shoot free throws to determine the winner. The people that were chosen to shoot will alternate shots. First shot will be taken by the team who did not have possession of the ball. The first to miss looses the game.

  7. Substitutions: Teams may substitute at any dead ball during the game.

  8. Stalling: There will be no shot clock. However, it is a violation to “stall” the ball during play. Teams are expected to develop their own pace of play and maintain this throughout the game. If a team intentionally denies their opponent a final possession of the ball and it is enforced by the opposing team, there will be ten seconds added to the clock.

  9. Ready to Play: For this sport, “ready to play” means that a team must be on the playing area with a minimum of two players. A team with two attending players will be allowed to play 2-on-2 if the opposing captain agrees. If the opposing captain does not agree the short handed team must play 2-on-3 or forfeit.

  10. Conduct: Good sports conduct is essential. All disputes are expected to be handled by the team captains with a good sport conduct attitude. If an agreement cannot be made the league coordinator will step in to settle the dispute. It is the league coordinator's right to suspend or eject anyone who doesn't comply with these rules.

These rules are subject to change if deemed necessary by
authorized members of Princeton Health & Fitness.
